The quick and simple answer is yes.  Some states allow for executors to settle the affairs of an estate without an attorney. But the best practice is to consult with an attorney and have him review matters initially even though the state that you live in may not require it. There are so manner issues that come into play during estate settlement and probate. There is valuing the assets, accounting for estate expenses and even the executors fees. It would be penny wise and dollar foolish to try to save a few bucks and then make a costly mistake or even worse be sued by a family member.  While most people consider being named in a will as a executor as similar as being named a god parent. IT ISN’T. I learned this the hard way and nearly got sued.  My advice is to find a probate attorney and to  Find a probate attorney fast before time passes or you make the inevitable mistake. It’s just too big of a snake pit to "do it yourself" alone.
