For the most part, the basic ingredients used in homemade soap recipes are fairly predictable.  To begin, you will need a source of fat or oil.  While many recipes call for beef tallow or pork lard, you can also substitute olive oil and vegetable oil.  Many recipes also call for the addition of lye.  Depending on your circumstances, you can obtain lye from potash.  This is especially important, considering many stores have removed lye from their shelves.  Finally, most soap recipes also call for some form of fragrance or coloring.  As may be expected, there are hundreds, if not thousands of possible combinations.
